ASTM International approves new jet fuel blend, opens doors to biofuel use

Updated: Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Those who hope to launch a business career in the biofuels industry may be interested to know that the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has given a green light to jet fuel blended with synthetic paraffinic kerosene from the Fischer-Tropsch process.

According to Aerospace Industries Association, which represents America's leading manufacturers and suppliers of civil, military and business aircraft as well as related technologies, the move marks an important step towards making alternative jet fuels more popular in commercial, private and military aviation.

"This is another step forward in our industry's efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and secure energy independence," says the organization's president and CEO Marion Blakey.

ASTM's decision will allow synthetic paraffinic kerosene from the Fischer-Tropsch process (FT-SPK) to be blended with conventional fuels and used in place of purely crude-oil derived jet fuels.

The AIA says there are other alternative fuel technologies, such as Bio-SPKs, awaiting the organization's approval.

The growing concern over climate change, and the government's vow to help America achieve energy independence, means the renewable energy and biofuels sector is likely to experience a dynamic growth in the years to come.

Those who would like to position themselves for a rewarding career may consider enrolling in a masters or doctoral program in environmental sciences as environmental specialists are predicted to experience a 25 percent growth in demand for their skills in the next seven years.
