Biofuel industry benefits from technological advances
As more companies move towards using biofuel as a more environmentally friendly energy source, technology must also advance in order to meet this increased demand.
Dr Richard Hess from the Idaho National Laboratory examined the cost effectiveness of using lignocellulosic biomass which is derived from corn stover.
Hess and his team aimed to find ways to apply technology to current systems of obtaining the corn stover and converting it to fuel and ultimately cut costs.
While advanced equipment may make the fuel conversion more efficient, the existing corn supply system will need to improve and streamline the technology and design in order to truly be money-saving.
Hess explains that biofuel is one way that society will incorporate the proposed energy-efficient changes proposed in the administration's recently passed American Clean Energy and Security Act.
"In addition to having the potential of contributing to sustainable transportation fuels in the USA, cellulosic ethanol is a globally recognized path to achieving reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming," he said.
For those interested in entering the biofuel industry, there are many resources nationwide to help individuals plan their education and careers.
