Canadian Pacific launches biofuel testing initiative

Updated: Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Canadian Pacific has announced it will partner with Natural Resources Canada to test locomotives that are fueled by biodiesel.

The transportation company and environmental organization have launched the National Renewable Diesel Demonstration Initiative to determine whether or not biofuels have a detrimental effect on locomotives and when they are used in cold weather.

A total of four locomotives will be fueled by biodiesel that will be provided by General Electric and 4Refuels. During five months, researchers will study the impact the use of such fuels has on the locomotives' systems.

The initiative was launched in response to the Canadian government's plan to ensure 5 percent of diesel fuels and 2 percent of heating oils consumed nationwide contain renewable materials within the next two years.

This plan is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter.

As government programs promoting the use of sustainable fuels expand, the need for professionals who have completed associates, bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management or biofuels will increase.

The demand for environmental engineers, whose median annual earnings were $69,940 in May 2006, is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
