Journalists to test drive biofuel and hybrid green cars at LA Auto Show

Updated: Monday, October 26th, 2009

The Green Car Journal and the LA Auto Show have announced they will hold a Ride and Drive event on December 3 to offer journalists the opportunity to drive new and experimental green car models.

Members of the media who attend the LA Auto Show will be able to test drive cars from North American, European and Asian automobile manufacturers that are designed to be fuel efficient, environmentally friendly or use alternative fuels.

Many of the vehicles slated to be tested are still in the development stages and are rarely or never available for test drives.

Rarely seen participating vehicles include the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid, Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, Porsche Cayenne Diesel, and the Volkswagen E-Up.

Ron Cogan, the program's organizer, said the event is intended to "[enable] journalists…to get behind the wheel of these innovative vehicles and put them through their paces on city streets."

The automobile sector will expect an increase in the demand for environmental engineers who have completed associates, bachelors or masters programs in biofuel or sustainable management. Opportunities for these professionals, whose earnings averaged $69,940 in 2006, are expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
