Agriculture Appropriations Amendment to boost Agri-Business and Ecotourism

Updated: Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

On Monday, the U.S. Senate passed an amendment sponsored by Senator Mary Landrieu to boost tourism revenue for rural small businesses and create new business career opportunities in the agri-tourism sector.

The amendment is part of the Agriculture Appropriations bill, and the Louisiana Democrat says it will help the government coordinate its tourism promotion efforts and channel federal funds to deserving rural communities and small farms with a view of attracting visitors.

"The tourism industry remains largely untapped for small rural firms, [yet] tourists can bring in extra profits for businesses and sales tax for communities," she stresses.

The effort is also consistent with the lifestyle changes taking place in America which put more emphasis on environmentally-friendly leisure choices and energy-saving practices. As such, entering the field of ecotourism may prove to be a lucrative career choice.

Prospective students have a range of bachelors programs in green tourism and hospitality to choose from, including online degrees.

The Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship, which Landrieu chairs, says one in every 18 Americans is employed by the travel and tourism industry, and the sector is fast becoming an important element of the U.S. economy.
