Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to award grants to supp
Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced that it will kick off its 2010 Environmental Education Grant initiative to benefit organizations interested in addressing environmental issues, including schools that offer bachelors and masters programs in green education.
The DEP began awarding grants in 1993 as a part of the Environmental Education Act, which requires 5 percent of air pollution fines collected by the state to go toward environmentally centered learning.
Various organizations - including schools, universities, county conservation districts, nonprofit companies and business - may apply for the grants in order to develop or create programs to explore current environmental issues. Each winner will receive up to $7,500 to examine problems such as air quality, watershed and wetland conservation or carbon capture and storage.
The programs are intended to "fund projects that explore many of today's most pressing issues" in order to allow "all Pennsylvanians to increase their understanding" and promote "lifelong stewardship," said Jack Farster, environmental education director for the DEP.
Such programs may open up opportunities for those interested in environmental science to complete bachelors or masters programs and land jobs in a growing career field. The demand for specialists in environmental science is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
