Training for government jobs expected to expand

Updated: Thursday, July 9th, 2009

A new study of job seekers' preferences has found a growing interest in government careers.

According to a recent CareerBuilder survey of more than 2,900 workers, as many as 88 percent say they are interested in jobs within the public sector.

Among those, a total of 41 percent reported that they would be willing to join the ranks of federal government employees, while 47 percent said they are interested in jobs within state and local government.

In addition to that, more than 34 percent of job seekers surveyed said that the economic stimulus plan made them more interested in positions within government.

"In an uncertain market, job security is a huge selling point for workers," says Chuck Loeher, vice president of Government Solutions at CareerBuilder. "Sixty-one percent of job seekers we surveyed said they think government jobs are more stable than private sector positions - a desirable asset in a tough economy."

For those seeking a fulfilling public sector career, environmental law may be an option.

While traditional universities have typically been chosen by those interested in a legal profession, there is a growing number of schools offering online degrees as well.
