Electric motorcycles first to meet environmental standards

Updated: Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Zero Motorcycles has announced that its all-electric vehicles are the first to meet safety standards and be certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The company's S and DS models met the safety requirements of both the U.S. and Canada and received the EPA's Certificate of Conformity.

Both models get an estimated 455 miles per gallon without emitting any carbon dioxide. The vehicles are also non-toxic, almost completely recyclable and suitable for travel on various terrain.

Compliance with the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and the EPA's certification qualify owners of the motorcycles for a 10 percent federal tax credit as well as a state sales tax credit as allowed by this year's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Growing industries such as this may provide new career opportunities, as the demand for environmental specialists is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years. Those wishing to capitalize on these prospects may consider associates or bachelors programs in sustainable management or an electrical engineering program with a green focus.
