Massachusetts Water Resources Authority announces new water treatment initi
The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority has signed a contract with Calgon Carbon to begin using new treatment methods for Boston's water.
The John Carroll Water Treatment Plant in Marlboro, Massachusetts, will adopt an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system scheduled to begin in June 2012.
The plant will receive twelve of the air and water purification company's Sentinal Chevron 48 reactors, which can treat up to 48 million gallons of drinking water per day. These machines are the company's highest flow units and expected to treat up to 450 million gallons of Boston's drinking water per year.
The company signed a similar contract to purify drinking water in San Francisco earlier this year.
Jim Sullivan, vice president of UV technologies and business development for Calgon Carbon, said he hopes "meet[ing] Boston's disinfection and compliance needs" will further the company's "position in the growing, global drinking water disinfection market."
The expansion of international business in this industry is one reason why the need for environmental scientists who have completed associates or bachelors programs is expected to increase by 25 percent over the next seven years.
