PERI report says green investments can lead to jobs, better environment

Updated: Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Those considering a masters degree in environmental science may be happy to note that a recent report from the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) found that an investment of $150 billion could significantly improve the employment situation.

In fact, Dr Sekou Franklin, assistant professor of political science at Tennessee State University, used that study to calculate such an investment would create some 15,000 new jobs in his region alone.

It would also have a positive environmental impact, says Franklin, who suggests the area's mass transit system could do with green improvements.

"We need a broader public-transportation system so that workers can get to work and also in order to reduce fossil fuels," he observes, stressing this would limit the number of people who spend money on gas and oil.

While some green jobs require only a high school degree, most of the better-paying ones that offer stability and financial security require at least a college degree, and a variety of educational institutions offer bachelors or masters programs in biotechnology, biochemistry or environmental sciences.

Official statistics suggest job growth for environmental specialists will experience a very dynamic increase of 25 percent over the next seven years, and top salaries in the field already exceed $94,670.
