Partnership launches efforts to restore wetlands in Louisiana

Updated: Monday, November 30th, 2009

Entergy Corporation has announced it will partner with Restore America's Estuaries, the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and Jefferson Parish to rejuvenate wetlands across the state.

Through Entergy's Environmental Initiatives Fund, the organizations will launch two conservation initiatives.

Cypress trees that provide shelter for migratory birds in the region and offer protection for oceanside residents will be planted through the Coastal Bayou Segnette Cypress planting.

The partnership will also work to promote the coastal protection principles established by Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast.

To date, Entergy has donated more than $280,000 to Restore America's Estuaries to fund similar restoration initiatives.

Steven Peyrommin, executive director of the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, said the partnership is "a perfect example of what we can accomplish in Louisiana when good corporate citizens work with conservation organizations and local partners."

Similar restoration and conservation efforts may provide job opportunities for individuals who have completed associates, bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management or environmental science.

Employment prospects for conservation scientists, whose median annual earnings were $54,970, are expected to grow by 5 percent over the next seven years.
