SmartPower and Climate Culture recognize greenest nationwide college campus

Updated: Thursday, October 15th, 2009

SmartPower, a clean energy and energy efficiency marketing company, and Climate Culture, an online carbon measurement and reduction tool, have announced the winners of America's Greenest Campus, their collaborative contest for students in associates and bachelors programs nationwide.

The University of Maryland at College Park recorded the highest amount of participants totaling 2,257 students. Rio Salado College's 524 competitors reported the greatest reduction of carbon dioxide emission per student, as the each student emitted 4.4 percent less of the chemical than the average person.

More than 20,000 students, faculty and alumni from 460 schools across the country competed for a $5,000 cash prize to put toward environmentally friendly initiatives on campus.

The University of Maryland at College Park's win will support the school's Engaged University, a model community examining the economic, social and environmental benefits of sustainable living.

Phoenix-based Rio Salado will use the prize to launch a Community Garden Project to encourage native and local food growth, sustainable farming, composting, healthy lifestyles and lower municipal spending through sustainable efforts.

Bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management, green agriculture or environmental science can help individuals use eco-friendly practices to achieve their educational and professional goals. The demand for specialists in fields such as these is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
