Waste Connections of Colorado and RecycleBank will work together to implement an incentive program to increase household recycling volumes in the state.
The two companies will begin rewarding recyclers with points that can be redeemed at local and national retailers, restaurants and supermarkets.
Waste Connections will deliver 96-gallon recycling carts to its customers in north suburban Denver. The carts, which will be tagged with a number identifying each household's address and account number, will be used to track recycling.
The tracking system will award points based on the amount of recycled material. The points can be used to gain rewards or purchase gift cards, groceries and products from companies such as Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, Dick's Sporting Goods, CVS/Pharmacy as well as Bed, Bath and Beyond.
The program is intended to provide Colorado residents with "environmental solutions [that] offer great economic value," said Ron Gonen, co-founder and CEO of RecycleBank.
Such programs are one example of how the environmental science industry is rapidly growing. The demand for specialists in this field is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
