Green Agriculture helped by USDA Master Gardeners

Updated: Thursday, July 16th, 2009

The United States Department of Agriculture understands the importance of bringing green agriculture advice to the everyday gardener and is subsequently creating awareness about its Master Gardeners program.

Master Gardeners offer assistance to all Americans who want to start a garden, or are unsure about planting techniques and the correct climate for certain plants.

This initiative has been in existence since 1972 but today's emphasis on sustainability and organic food production has lead the USDA to ramp up its efforts in getting people to use the service.

Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack explains how everyday citizens can benefit from working with Master Gardeners to cultivate their plots of land.

"Growing fruits and vegetables in your own garden not only promotes a healthier lifestyle, but helps communities develop a safe, nutritious and sustainable source of food," he said.

Last year, Master Gardeners volunteered over 5 million hours of service around the country and about 80 percent of this time occurred in metropolitan areas. Interested individuals can locate services through the USDA's website.

This program highlights the importance of green agriculture especially in densely populated cities and those who hope to pursue a career in this field can find many resources nationwide. ADNFCR-2291-ID-19269677-ADNFCR
