Green Architecture Contest preps students for Careers
In a sign of the opportunities open to those who pursue bachelors programs in architecture, a team of undergraduates from California is participating in the 2009 Solar Decathlon.
The international competition sponsored by the Department of Energy challenges college teams to design, build and operate aesthetic and energy-efficient model homes.
Each house must produce enough electricity and hot water to perform all the functions of a home and also to power an electric car.
The competition focuses on cutting-edge energy efficiency and renewable energy innovation while providing a unique green jobs training opportunity for each of the students.
Team California's REFRACT design combines art and engineering to create a living space featuring an innovative solar design that will offer green technology solutions and renewable energy sources as well as opportunities to use energy more efficiently.
The 800-square foot home "is completely powered by solar energy which doesn't compromise the planet, lifestyle, comfort or aesthetics," says Kadee Mardula, a participating student.
The group's motto is "Green living isn't a compromise. It's the new standard."
Students who graduate from bachelors or masters programs in architecture have bright career prospects. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for architects will grow by a dynamic 18 percent until 2016, and top earners - especially those with knowledge of green architecture - can expect their salaries to exceed $104,000.
