Hospital food benefits from green agriculture

Updated: Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Long bemoaned for its poor taste, hospital food is about to get a makeover in Northern California, thanks to help from the local green agriculture industry.

Mercury News reports that doctors, nurses and other hospital workers at institutions like Kaiser Permanente are promoting the use of organic, pesticide free foods in hospital kitchens.

Others take it one step further and have encouraged a farmers market to be held on hospital grounds.

However, hospitals across the state are uniting on the use of locally grown, hormone-free meats and organically grown vegetables, the news service reveals.

For example, Catholic Healthcare West even has an ecology coordinator, Sister Mary Ellen, on staff and she outlines her mission statement that "we want to make sure what comes in the front door is as healthy and green as possible" because she says a healthy environment promotes healthy people.

Meanwhile, some farmers are wary of the proposed Food Safety Enhancement Act that may put restrictions on organic farming and green agriculture.

The Food and Drug Administration would receive greater power of regulation and charge farmers a registration fee each year. Some feel this move is not nessary, media sources report.
