Ontario government to accept proposals for forestry initiatives
Ontario's Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry has announced it will begin accepting proposals for how wood from regional forests may be used.
Anyone who is interested in using the province's wood supply and investing in the region, including forestry companies, are encouraged to submit proposals detailing how they wish to use part of the 11 million cubic meters of wood that is currently available for manufacturing or other commercial purposes.
This competitive process is the second phase of Ontario's Staged Competition for Wood Supply, which began in January with a request for expressions of interest. Approximately 130 candidates answered this call by submitting suggestions for use in the biofuel, biochemical, wood pellet, heat, power and composite industries, according to the ministry's website.
Ministry officials said they wish to use the forests, which cover nearly 60 percent of the province, to create green jobs and inspire new investments in the forest industry.
Similar initiatives could create job opportunities for individuals who have completed associates, bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management or green agriculture.
Employment opportunities for foresters, whose median annual earnings were $51,190 in May 2006, are expected to increase by 5 percent over the next seven years.
