Green architecture education leads to recession-proof careers
Expansion efforts recently announced by Point Park University in Pittsburgh show how masters programs in architecture open doors to careers that experience high demand even in the midst of an economic downturn.
The university is entering a new phase of its Academic Village at Point Park University, a $244 million campus and public enhancement space project, and has unveiled the composition of the architectural and urban planning team.
Two firms will lead the efforts, with one of them in charge of producing the design for an urban park, while another will come up with a blueprint of the streetscape enhancements.
Point Park will also hire its first-ever campus architect and planner to oversee all aspects of the Academic Village Initiative.
"We have made $30 million in investments to campus facilities, secured widespread support from the community and are developing plans to break ground on the urban park this year," says Paul Hennigan, the school's president.
The university has also released a report on the economic impact of the project which estimates it will be an important contributor to the local economy through creating nearly 4,000 full- and part-time jobs and adding some $280 million to the economy.
Business careers in landscape architecture promise to be lucrative going forward. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates job growth in that field to average 16 percent over the next several years, with some earning more than $95,000 a year.
