Internship may lead to bachelors program in green architecture

Updated: Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

A local architectural firm in Texas has recently completed the seventh annual edition of a program that introduces high school students to the principles of green design and may spur their interest in pursuing a bachelors or masters programs in the field.

According to Forth Worth Business Press, during the Next Generation Design Institute, a 10-day internship program, participating students had to create a 1,600-square-foot sustainable single-family home that included at least five green elements such as green roofs, day lighting, renewable resources, xeroscaping, energy efficient systems or natural ventilation.

"It's a very important thing, I think, for us to be aware of," said Jennifer Clariday, director of marketing and public relations at Huckabee, the sponsoring firm, quoted by the news source.

"They're going to hear it a lot, especially if they pursue [architecture] as a career and this is giving them a vision for it now," she added.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for architects will grow by a dynamic 18 percent until 2016, with salaries for some in the field expected to exceed $104,000.

Commentators also agree that specialists with experience and knowledge of sustainable and eco-friendly design are expected to do particularly well, making the field a lucrative business career choice.
