Masters program at Philadelphia University receives honors from the U.S. Gr

Updated: Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

The University of Philidelphia's masters program in sustainable design has received the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Excellence in Green Building Education Recognition Award.

The award is intended to "[recognize] those organizations that are taking the lead in the development of innovative green building knowledge and resources," said Rebecca Flora, senior vice president for education and research for the USGBC.

Rob Fleming, director of the sustainable design program at Philadelphia University, said the program does this by "encouraging trans-disciplinary collaboration among faculty members and students from diverse academic backgrounds."

The program aims to provide an education that crosses many industries, including architecture, real estate, design and construction, to enable graduates to use eco-friendly business operations while developing green building designs.

The university is among five other schools nationwide to be rewarded by the USGBC for their efforts toward sustainable education. Other recipients of this year's award include Duke University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Iowa State University and the University of Arkansas.

Students of architecture may wish to enter masters programs addressing sustainability to increase their competitive edge, as the demand for architects – particularly those with knowledge of environmental design – is expected to increase by 18 percent over the next seven years.
