SGB Homes and Haven Custom Homes to present first green modular home at 200

Updated: Friday, October 2nd, 2009

SGB Homes and Haven Custom Homes announced that they will reveal the first green modular home design at this year's Homearama show in Chesapeake, Virginia this weekend.

The two companies partnered with Wissmach Architects to create the Whitaker model, a four-bedroom cottage-style home. The Energy Star-certified 2,898 square foot house includes environmentally friendly aspects such as pant with low amounts of volatile organic compounds, Zip Wall roof and wall sheathing, a geothermal HVAC system, low-E windows and doors, insulated plumbing and lighting fixtures, and a cork floor in one room.

Jerry Smalley, CEO and president of Haven Custom Homes, called the model "an excellent example of the superior design, high quality craftsmanship and green features that are possible through…modular construction technique[s]."

The Homemaker show will offer tours of 12 models between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet, an exhibit center, a Taste of Chesapeake event and a furniture sale.

The rising popularity of green home design is one reason why the demand for architects - especially those who have learned environmentally friendly techniques in associates or bachelors programs – is expected to rise by 18 percent over the next seven years.
