Smith College to become greener with a donation from Ford
Ford Motor Company has announced that it will support sustainability efforts at Smith College through a $12.6 million donation.
Today, the Northampton, Massachusetts-based college dedicated Ford Hall, the campus's first LEED-certified building that was erected with the help of a $10 million contribution from Ford. The building gained its certification though features such as green roofs, porous pavement, vegetated swales and environmentally responsible mechanical systems.
The 140,000 square foot building will house the college's Picker Engineering Program and provide classrooms for courses in computer science, chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology.
Ford Hall also offered a student design team the opportunity to help develop the heat and power cogeneration system used in the building.
The automobile manufacturer also awarded the school an additional $2.6 million to support its engineering program, provide scholarships to engineering and science students as well as enhance curriculum and sustainability projects on campus.
Prospective architects can benefit from undergraduate and masters programs in sustainable management, green architecture and building or renewable energy, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates prospects for architects with green design skills will increase. The demand for architects - particularly those versed in energy efficiency - is expected to grow by 17 percent over the next seven years.
