Teams from 20 worldwide universities will showcase their entries in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Solar Decathlon this month at the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Representatives from colleges in the U.S., Canada, Spain and Germany will show off their solar-powered home designs October 19 to 13 and 15 to 18 in the nation's capital and await judgment from the DOE on October 16.

This is the eighth year the DOE has held the competition, which requires entrants to build high-tech, high-efficiency houses that include the latest green designs and technologies.

Competitors will also go up against one another in a series of ten contests to explore the architecture, engineering, comfort, marketability, appliances, lighting and other facets of each home. The students will participate in normal tasks such as cooking, laundry and dishwashing to evaluate the energy efficiency of their entries.

Those interested in benefiting from the growing opportunities in green energy efforts may consider entering bachelors or masters programs in environmental science to update their qualifications. The demand for specialists in this field is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
