Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative applies for sustainable electricity generat

Updated: Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

One of the largest electric cooperatives in Texas is requesting $18.8 million in grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to complete the next phase of its Sustainable Grid initiative.

If successful, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative will open new business career opportunities for current and future employees by creating sustainable communities which are able to conserve energy with a goal of having a net zero impact on the state's energy grid.

"The funding will enable Bluebonnet to more quickly and effectively implement the next generation of smart grid technology throughout its entire electric delivery system," says Mark Rose, the company's general manager and CEO.

"One of our primary goals with this technology is a 20 percent reduction in system load by 2020, which will benefit our members, the economy and the environment," he adds.

As businesses across the nation take advantage of the stimulus money to improve their energy efficiency, they will need employees with skills and knowledge in the area of green power generation and sustainable management.

Fortunately, there are many academic programs offering masters, doctoral and green MBA degrees that can accommodate those seeking to acquire 21st century skills.

Official statistics estimate environmental scientists and specialists - some of whom already make more than $94,670 - will experience job growth in their field averaging 25 percent for the next seven years.
