California community colleges pursue green solutions
Community colleges in California are working together to make their associates programs more environmentally friendly.
Leaders from most of the state's 110 community colleges will meet from October 5-7 at the 2009 Green California Community Colleges Summit in Pasadena to discuss and learn about this year's theme which is Green Solutions for Tough Economic Times.
Representatives from the colleges will meet with government officials, policy makers, curriculum developers, suppliers of green products and services as well as other proponents of environmental health to render support for initiatives already put into practice.
Educational offerings at the summit will include pre-conference workshops, information on sources of funding for energy efficient programs or renewable energy initiatives, abstracts on savings from green programs, curriculum, transportation and other campus environmental issues.
Community colleges compose 79 percent of California's higher education enrollment and are "central to [the state's] well-being," said David Crane, special advisor to the governor of California for jobs and economic growth.
"If we can't properly fund UC, CSU and the community colleges, we have a very serious problem in California - not just economic, but a quality of life problem," he added.
Studies have shown that salaries of graduates of associates or bachelors programs consistently surpass the earnings of those without higher education.
