Coalition announces new digital smart grid project in San Diego
The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and CleanTECH San Diego are taking strides to preserve energy, foster sustainable energy choices and create opportunities for business careers in the green industry in San Diego.
The three organizations announced Thursday the collaboration of 25 organizations working together to turn the city's electrical grid into a digital smart grid.
The grid is intended to serve as a prototype large-scale utility system that will connect greater levels of renewable generation, store electricity and manage resources using automated sensors and communication technologies.
The grid will also aim to accommodate increased amounts of electric vehicles and provide a greater level of energy usage regulation on the individual level.
Lisa Bicker, president of CleanTECH San Diego, said the ultimate goal of the grid is to "enable new products, service and markets to fuel an economic engine in San Diego and beyond [while bringing] new clean technology jobs and export opportunities."
Associates and bachelors programs exist for those wishing to capitalize on such opportunities in the environmental science industry. The demand for specialists in this field is expected to increase by 25 percent over the next seven years.
