Major wind energy project to launch in California
Pacific Gas and Electric has announced it will partner with Iberdrola Renewables to build and operate the Manzana Wind Project in Southern California.
The wind power-generating plant, which was proposed in February, will be the company's first project of this kind.
Spanning 7,000 acres in the Tehachapi region of Eastern Kern County, California, the plant is expected to hold up to 246 megawatts of power and has a projected annual output of 670 gigawatt-hours, which is equal to the average energy consumption of 100,000 homes.
Pending approval form the California Public Utilities Commission, the $900 million plant could begin producing power within the next two years.
Fong Wan, the power company's senior vice president for energy procurement, said the project aims to meet "customers' future power needs with clean energy solutions."
Similar initiatives may provide job opportunities for engineers who have completed associates, bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management or green power generation and renewable energy.
The demand for environmental engineers, whose median annual earnings were $69,940 in May 2006, is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
