National standard applied to solar energy code

Updated: Friday, November 6th, 2009

The American National Standards Institute has announced it has applied its American National Standard certification to the 2009 Uniform Solar Energy Code.

In 1976, a committee for the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials developed the original version of the code. To date, the current revision is the only regulator of the installation, inspection and maintenance of solar energy systems.

Comprehensive coverage of solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, installation allowances for single wall heat exchangers, access requirements for the maintenance and repair of solar collectors as well as waterproofing standards are included in the 2009 version.

The current code also includes protection requirements for freezing temperatures, water hammer, rodents, corrosion, ultraviolet radiation, decay and termites for solar energy systems.

Steve Wydeveld, the chief building official for Homer Glen, Illinois, said the code will "remove all of the guess work and ensure that any solar energy system installed…is completely safe and reliable."

As many official steps are taken to regulate the growing alternative energy industry, the need for professionals who have been trained in associates, bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management or green power generation and renewable energy will increase.

Solar photovoltaic installation crew leaders with such educational qualifications can earn between $20 and $25 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.ADNFCR-2291-ID-19462965-ADNFCR
