Poll: Americans in favor of solar energy

Updated: Friday, October 9th, 2009

The majority of Americans from all political backgrounds wish to adopt solar energy initiatives, a new poll has found.

Kelton Researcher's study, called the 2009 SCHOTT Solar Barometer, indicated that 92 percent of Americans surveyed believe the U.S. should explore ways to integrate solar energy into everyday life.

These sentiments have not changed significantly in the past year, as 94 percent of participants in the same survey in June 2008 showed the same support.

Nearly 80 percent of respondents also suggested that the development of solar power and other sources of renewable energy should be a major legislative and financial priority of the government. Wind, natural gas and nuclear power were other environmentally friendly energy sources favored by survey participants.

Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, said these findings indicate "Americans overwhelmingly want clean, reliable solar energy for their homes and businesses."

Widespread use of solar energy may "reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions while creating jobs in all 50 states," Resch added.

Bachelors or masters programs in sustainable management, green power generation and renewable energy may help prepare jobseekers to compete for new jobs in a growing market, as the demand for environmental scientists and specialists is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
