Stimulus funds support solar electricity project in Pennsylvania
Graduates of masters programs in green engineering can expect to find plenty of work in projects like the new Campus Square building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
There is a 50.5 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system under construction on the roof of the building which will eliminate an estimated 61,000 lbs of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen that would otherwise enter the atmosphere each year.
"What we are witnessing is not only a statewide commitment to taking necessary strides towards developing renewable and sustainable energy systems, but we also are fueling much-needed community revitalization, economic development and local job creation," says John Hanger, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The installation covers 1,110 square feet and uses 74 panels linked together to produce electricity from the heat generated by the sun for the common and public areas of the building.
Environmental scientists and engineers are instrumental in developing such technologies, and the current emphasis on sustainable development promises they will continue to see bright business career opportunities.
Official statistics put the growth in demand for environmental scientists and specialists at 25 percent over the next seven years, with top earners making more than $94,670.
