World's largest cruise ship to use solar power
BAM Solar Power has announced one of its solar power systems will be used on the maiden voyage of Royal Caribbean International's Oasis of the Seas cruise ship.
The vessel, which is the largest of its kind to be build to date, will use solar power collected from 550 panels that have been installed over 30,000 feet of the ship's top deck.
These panels will generate enough energy to power the Royal Promenade area - which features eight retail stores, nine restaurants and bars, a photo gallery and a men's salon when the ship departs December 1 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Solar energy use is one of many facets the ship's designers used to make the vessel environmentally friendly, including an on-deck park and outdoor AquaTheatre.
Andrew Rasken, president of BAM Solar Power, said its joint venture with Royal Caribbean International shows "luxury and the environment do not have to be at odds and that going green makes economic sense.
Many companies are increasing their environmentally conscious efforts, which may create job opportunities for professionals who have completed associates, bachelors or masters programs in green power generation or sustainable management.
The demand for environmental engineers, whose median annual earnings were $69,940 in May 2006, are expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
