Car-sharing programs could save money, reduce emissions

Updated: Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Students enrolled in bachelors and masters programs nationwide could save money while helping the environment by using car share programs.

A new study from Zipcar, a car-sharing service, estimates that short-term car rental programs could save college students and their institutions more than $20 billion annually.

University car sharing may also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 6.5 billion tons per year.

By combining data from the Environmental Protection Agency and its membership figures, the company - which presently serves more than 140 campuses in the U.S. and UK - reported that its programs currently reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 56 million pounds annually, which is equivalent to the pollution produced by 4,800 passenger vehicles each year.

Scott Griffith, Zipcar's chairman and CEO, said car-sharing programs may alleviate the pressures "universities are under…to address parking and congestion issues, while also controlling costs and delivery on sustainability initiatives."

Those wishing to seek sustainable solutions to everyday problems in their careers may consider bachelors or masters programs in growing industries such as sustainable management, environmental science or green power generation and renewable energy. The demand for environmental specialists is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
