Fortune 500 companies receive All-Electric Commercial Vehicles

Updated: Thursday, July 30th, 2009

In a ceremony on Capitol Hill, representatives of four Fortune 500 companies and two utility companies took delivery of the first in a series of next generation all-electric commercial vehicles in a sign of international business's increasing commitment to sustainable management.

In a ceremony hosted by Missouri Senator Kit Bond, the companies - which included Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Coca-Cola, Staples, Frito-Lay, AT&T and Kansas City Power & Light - were presented with the keys to new Smith Newtons, the world's largest commercial battery-electric-powered truck.

"The next generation electric vehicles Smith is producing demonstrates exactly the kind of technology we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and end our dependence on foreign oil," Senator Bond said.

Environmental scientists, including engineers, are at the forefront of the efforts to develop the next generation of green vehicles, household appliances and other products.

Official figures suggest those who decide to pursue business careers in environmental science will see job growth in their field averaging a very dynamic 25 percent over the next several years, and top salaries will exceed $94,670.

Meanwhile, employment growth for environmental engineers will also average 25 percent by 2016, with the top 10 percent earning more than $106,230 a year.
