Keep America Beautiful releases results of 2009 Great American Cleanup
Keep America Beautiful, a community improvement organization, has announced the results of its 2009 Great American Cleanup Initiative.
The program, which ran from March 1 to May 31, asked communities to follow the theme "Green Starts Here" by encouraging each individual to take a personal green initiative.
Community efforts included educational events, litter cleanups, recycling drives, graffiti paint-outs, and tree or garden plantings.
The Great American Cleanup gained the support of 3 million volunteers from more than 32,000 communities across the country and 1,000 grassroots organizations who worked together to clock a combined 5.2 million volunteer hours over the program's three-month span.
Other achievements include the removal of 64 million pounds of litter and debris from public lands and the planting 2.3 million flowers and bulbs.
The work the volunteers "accomplished on behalf of their communities" included "remarkable achievements" in environmental awareness, said Matthew M. McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful.
Those interested in turning green activism into a career may have more options after completing bachelors or masters programs in environmental science, as the demand for specialists in this field is expected to grow by 25 percent over the next seven years.
