Study: Sustainable management of energy could cut consumption by 23 percent

Updated: Monday, August 3rd, 2009

A new report from McKinsey has found there is room for improving America's energy situation if appropriate investments are devoted to making homes and businesses more efficient.

Reporting findings that could have far-reaching consequences for those seeking a business career in the field of sustainable management, the study has found that investment of $520 billion in sealing ducts and more efficient appliances could produce $1.2 trillion in savings through 2020, according to the New York Times.

McKinsey analysts stress, however, that while boosting energy efficiency is important, the real savings and environmental impact will come from developing renewable energy sources.

"Energy efficiency is an important and compelling low-cost option," says Jon Creyts, a McKinsey partner in Chicago, quoted by the Times.

"[B]ut there are reasons that we need to innovate and continue to develop clean sources of energy," he adds.

This type of debate is at the core of sustainable management, and as the issue gains ever more salience business careers in the field are also projected to be growing.

Those who want to be at the forefront of the debate, may consider enrolling in an accredited MBA program to acquire marketable skills and boost their chances of finding employment in the field of green management.
