Vancouver Urban Planning project yields Green Results

Updated: Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Even though the much-criticized former mayor of Vancouver Sam Sullivan is no longer in office, his EcoDensity urban planning project is credited with revitalizing neighborhoods and enhancing business career opportunities.

EcoDensity assumes that by concentrating population growth in compact areas well-served by transit, shopping and other amenities, the region could reduce its environmental footprint while improving the quality of life for residents, according to Vancouver Metro News.

It says the project's success has planners and politicians throughout the region seeking to emulate and expand it in their areas. As a result, community gardens, parks and apartment complexes are being built in close proximity to train stations and shopping centers.

The Vancouver effort to contain urban sprawl and protect the environment is an example of the growing sustainable trend in urban design, and it is promising exciting business opportunities to those with the right skills to enter the field.

There is a variety of bachelors and masters programs in urban planning that interested individuals are encouraged to explore.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says job growth rate for urban and regional planners will average 15 percent until 2016, with some earning more than $86,880 a year.
