Sustainable Management
The sustainability management initiative involves controlling greenhouse gases and other emissions, social justice, habitat protection, transportation planning, green building, energy and water conservation and alternative sources, waste reduction and management and other related issues and coordinating with business and industry to meet acceptable standards.
Corporate sustainability directors work with their employers to “greenify” their operations. Whatever the industry, sustainability managers work to reduce emissions and waste, improve energy efficiency and contribute to healthy communities.
The market for sustainability managers is growing along with concerns and laws regulating infrastructure for all industries. Everywhere that energy is used or produced, resources are collected or allocated, goods and manufactured and distributed, people and companies are engaging environmental standards, and oversight is increasingly required.
As the need for corporate responsibility increases, more major corporations are adding sustainability managers to their rosters – both Mitsubishi and Dow Chemicals hired sustainability professionals in 2007. Since most sustainability managers are currently hired from within corporations, they are usually MBA holders and earn an average starting annual salary of $65,000 US. Once promoted to position of director or manager, sustainability professionals earn more than $100,000 annually.
